A Giant Foster Puppy
After bidding farewell to my previous foster, Bitsy, I eagerly embraced the opportunity to welcome another dog into my home. The call from Muddy Paws, the second rescue I had registered with, brought me to an adoption event in Manhattan where a van of puppies that needed fostering had just arrived. Little did I know, I was in for a surprise – the puppy I was picking up, Angel, turned out to be much larger than anticipated.
Undeterred by how big this baby was, we got in a cab ride and traveled over the Brooklyn Bridge to her new temporary home. The rescue informed me that Angel was likely a Sharpei and Great Dane mix, this explained why the small puppy I was expecting was labrador sized.
Angel, with her disproportionate, gangly legs and giant paws, proved to be more demanding than my previous foster, sweet Bitsy. Despite her size, Angel hadn't received all her shots yet, making outdoor walks impossible during the initial week. This meant I had to focus on mental stimulation and training to channel her boundless energy.
After her first week, Angel returned to Muddy Paws for shots and a chance to find her forever home at an adoption event. Due to concerns about her eventual size, she hadn't found a family by the end of the day. Although she didn't secure a permanent family that day, I happily picked her up for another week together. Finally allowed to explore the outdoors, we spent a lot of time in the park. Angel was really adapting to Brooklyn apartment life.
The following week, as I handed her over once again, I couldn't shake the feeling that this was Angel's day. Later that day, I received the call confirming that Angel had found her forever family, and I wouldn't need to pick her up again. It was heartening to know that Angel, despite her size, had secured a loving home in NYC.
