First NYC Foster Puppy
I have grown up with dogs and had dogs all my life, so when I moved to NYC I missed dogs so much. After finishing college, getting a job, and then getting a better job, it seemed like it might be a good time to consider getting a dog. However, instead of diving into pet ownership right away, I decided to channel my love for dogs into something meaningful – fostering.
After registering with two rescues dedicated to bringing dogs from kill shelters in the south to NYC, I eagerly awaited my first foster assignment. The very next day, I received a call to foster Bitsy, an adorable pitbull puppy from Georgia.
Bitsy wasted no time in making herself at home in my Brooklyn apartment. From stealing socks to nuzzling my arm for cuddles and sticking her nose into everything, she brought so much joy into my life.
Just a week later, Bitsy attended her first adoption event at adoptapolooza. After a volunteer whisked her away for the day, I later received the bittersweet news that she had found her forever home. The first foster leaving and not returning was undoubtedly the toughest part, but it also signified a heartwarming success – Bitsy had found a loving family.
With a mix of emotions, I embraced the reality that her departure meant I now had the opportunity to open my home to another dog in need. This ongoing journey of fostering has not only filled my need for dogs but has also allowed me to play a role in saving dogs by giving them a temporary home in NYC before they are adopted.
