Another Foster Puppy, Ernie
After a very brief hiatus from fostering, I received the call to welcome another foster puppy to my home - Ernie. As Ernie hadn't yet received all his shots, he spent the first two weeks with no paws on the ground. Following the rescue's advice, I embarked on a mission to socialise him, taking him on a tour of Manhattan.
Ernie became my sidekick, accompanying me to work on the subway, meeting my colleagues, napping in the office, and even joining me for brunch. His sweet demeanor won hearts. The rescue believed he was a mix of pitbull and rough collie, resulting in an undeniably cute puppy.
After two weeks of bonding with Ernie, he attended an adoption event to receive his shots and potentially find his forever home. Although he was adopted early on, it turned out not to be the perfect match, so I picked him up for another two weeks with me.
This was the longest fostering period so far and I had gotten used to taking Ernie everywhere with me, though he was rapidly growing and starting to get quite heavy in his carrier. Had he not been expected to grow into quite a big dog, I may have been tempted to foster fail, but unfortunately my apartment only allowed dogs of a certain size.
After the additional two weeks with Ernie, the rescue successfully identified a forever home for him. I accompanied him to the meet-and-greet, where it became evident that it was a perfect match. Saying goodbye was bittersweet, but I took comfort in knowing that Ernie had found a loving home. The experience with Ernie left me longing for another foster.
