3 Legged Dog- Foster Fail?

We recently got a request from Second Chance Rescue to take care of Brownie, an adorable dog who had just gone through a leg amputation. Her adopter had backed out, leaving Brownie in need of a temporary home. Brownie arrived with fresh stitches, a wagging tail, and was shy at first.

Brownie was supposed to have an adoption event the day after her arrival, but it was rained off, which meant we had Brownie for a whole week before the next event. Reading through the vet notes, I learned that Brownie was found as a stray in the Atlanta Zoo, roaming around with a broken leg. She was rescued, and they tried to save her leg but ended up having to amputate it.

Brownie ended up spending two weeks with me in Brooklyn, and I was so in love with her. Brownie was the most unoriginal name, so we started calling her Harley from about day 4. I was genuinely considering adopting Harley but had so many things to consider, like moving back to England, vet bills, and the building's pet restrictions.

That weekend, a potential adopter came over for a meet & greet with Harley. We bonded immediately and chatted for hours about dogs and fostering. Hillary, the potential adopter, said she had another dog meet and greet scheduled for tomorrow, and then she would let me know her decision. I felt that Hillary would be a great adopter, but I also wanted to keep Harley. I texted Hillary, saying that if she didn’t adopt Harley, I would, so no pressure on taking her as I knew she had another option. Hillary responded a few hours later with a picture of her and the dog she was meeting, Chori, another tripod, saying that she adopted Chori and now we can both be tripod dog moms!

A few months later, Harley hosted a tripod/tripaw meet-up at Boris & Horton, the dog cafe, and got to meet Hillary’s dog Chori, and a group of other dogs missing a leg/paw.

So it was decided; we were adopting Harley! I contacted our building and got everything approved. I foster failed. That is what they call it. However, we would continue to foster even after adopting Harley.
